There is no easy answer, however…
First steps include:
a) Research Your Area – Where do young people congregate? Where do they live – difficulties with transport? What else is provided for them by other agencies and by other churches in the vicinity of your church? etc
b) Research Your Own Resources – How many adult workers can you recruit? How much money do you think you need? What buildings are available? Where can you obtain resources you do not possess yourself? etc.
c) See what Other Churches are doing – Can you work better ecumenically than alone? Perhaps supporting someone elses work is an option?
d) Decide on a Plan – Try something for a time limited period.. Plan and prepare properly before starting – dont forget all new workers will need to be checked through the Disclosure and Barring Service and undergo safer recruitment process see Safer Recruitment of volunteers and paid workers
e) Evaluate your Progress – After a time limit (say 6 months) look back and evaluate. What needs changing?
Contact the Church Development worker, Michelle Howard for help with this process and other ideas e.g. Messy Church or the Synod Safeguarding Officer, Jan Murphy with help regarding recruitment of workers.
